Typical Portuguese food and drinks

Francesinha

Porto and Norther Portugal is known s the Francesinha birthplace and you have to try this rich meal at least once.  Comprised of Pork, sausage, steak, egg, bread and sauce, this sandwich, if you can call it that, seems to be invented as the ultimate hangover cure.

A delicious and quick snack sandwich that is ubiquitous throughout Portugal is known as the Bifana. Made with chopped pork cutlets slowly simmered in beer and often with a bit of spice, this inexpensive snack is quite filling and delicious.

Salted Cod Fish “Bacalau”

Salted Cod Fish “Bacalau”

t is said there are 365 ways to prepare Bacalar (one way for each day of the year perhaps). One of the most notable dishes of Portugal, the salted cod is present in just about every restaurant in some form. It is often found as fish cakes or as whole fillets, but strangely enough the cod fish isn’t found in waters off Portugal and  is shipped to Portugal from the north, most notably Norway.

Fresh and Canned Sardines

Freshly Roasted Artisinal Coffees

Whether freshly grilled or from a tin, these little fishies are a staple of the Portuguese cuisine. Give them a try with some crackers and of course a bottle of Vinho Verde.

The hard stuff

Sample some of the local spirits made from a wide variety of natural sugar sources. From limoncello to Aquardente, there are many spirits to sample and enjoy before or after dinner.

Although not a typical tradition, small scale roasters have popped up in larger towns in Portugal, such as Lisbon and Porto. With our own roaster on site we are able to always have a special fresh brew waiting for you. Anything from an espresso to an iced latte or maybe an affogato for desert. Taste how freshly roasted coffee makes such a difference in your favorite morning drink.

Porto’s Beer

Porto’s Beer

The most prolific beer in Northern Portugal is Super Bock. Although you can find craft beers in larger town like Porto and Lisbon, small microbreweries are still not a “go to” item in most smaller towns.
